ACTIVE BRUXISM MOUTHGUARD

WITH RELAXING EFFECT

The active bruxism control mouthguard is a unique mouthguard for bruxism management that can be filled with medication to relax the jaw and reduce muscle stress. This nightguard includes a compartment for muscle-relaxing medication, which releases automatically in proportion to the jaw-stress level.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

According to the Canadian Sleep Society, approximately 11% of children and 18% of adults in Canada suffer from bruxism and grind their teeth at night. People with bruxism are at high risk of developing jaw disorders, headaches, dental problems, and other health issues. Bruxism can cause severe tooth damage and impact deterioration, such as flattening, fracturing, and chipping of the teeth. This may result in tooth pain, erosion, and the deterioration of dental crowns, fillings, and implants. Prolonged teeth grinding can wear out the tooth enamel and expose deeper layers of the teeth (read more on the Living with Bruxism page).

MEDICATION RELEASE

Acetaminophen is the generic name for the muscle relaxant medication commonly used for Bruxism management; the active ingredient is paracetamol and the recommended dose is 1000 mg. This medication inhibits muscle contraction, temporarily reducing jaw pain by limiting the force that the muscles are able to generate. When sufficient pressure is applied to the dorsal surface of the blue compartment depicted in the image above, the pressure exerted onto the compartment squeezes a controlled dose of Acetaminophen out of the flat capsules which lie underneath and inside the three one-way ducts. The valve then closes, allowing enough medication to enter the mouth cavity while preventing unnecessary prolonged exposure. This process repeats itself whenever the set pressure threshold is exceeded, therefore guaranteeing an adequate release of medication when teeth grinding or clenching becomes an issue.
